Everything We Know About the Base Variant of Google Pixel 10

Google stated that it will be announcing the Pixel 10 series on the 20th of August. That announcement will see all of the specs, official images, and more details on it. But I don’t think there is any point to that because most of the specs have already been leaked, and it doesn’t get better than this.

Pixel 10 is going to be an anomaly, but in a good way. Pixel 10 will be receiving significant upgrades compared to its bigger brothers, 10 Pro and 10 Pro XL. “What are those upgrades?”, you might wonder.

This is what I will explore in this article. I am a Pixel 8 user, and the new version seems like a nice upgrade. If you, too, sail the same boat as mine (you have an old phone and need an improvement), stick around to find out all the leaks and rumored (genuine) specs for the Google Pixel 10.

Rumored Performance Specifications

The most important upgrade in the Pixel 10 over the Pixel 9 is going to be the processor and overall performance improvement. Let me explain.

Pixel 10 will be powered by the new Tensor G5 chipset, which is 25% better than the Tensor G4. There was a problem with the Tensor G4 chipset. It was basically a modified version of Samsung’s Exynos, which has a reputation for not delivering the best performance numbers. For years, Samsung’s flagships, which were powered by the Exynos chipset, struggled, and then Samsung ditched its own processor and went with Qualcomm Snapdragon, and users loved it. Now, the same case was repeating with the Pixel phones. They were overall great, but lacked when it came to the performance. So, the solution to that in Google’s books is ditching the Samsung-made Tensor chipset for TSMC Tensor, which will be based on the 3nm architecture.

For the sake of comparison, I have a Pixel 8, and even though I use reliable home Wi-Fi from Spectrum, known for its reliable speeds and reasonable internet prices, my Pixel 8 struggles to deliver performance, especially while gaming. I am a big fan of shooter games, and Call of Duty: Mobile’s performance wasn’t up to the mark on the Pixel 8. The problem wasn’t the internet; rather, it was the Tensor G3 chipset – it wasn’t great.

So, it is great to see TSMC taking the lead here as it did for Apple’s M and A series chipsets. Will it significantly improve the Pixel 10? Well, I think it will, and I hope that it will do just that.

Rumored Camera Upgrades

Cameras will receive certain improvements, while some might consider it neither an upgrade nor a downgrade. I know it is confusing you right now, but let me explain.

It has been a while since the base variant of the Pixel has had two cameras at the back and one at the front. Well, it won’t be the same now, as the base variant of this year’s Pixel will receive three cameras at the back, and one selfie camera.

Now, why did I say that some will consider neither an upgrade nor a downgrade? The reason for that is that Google will be utilizing the same body of the Pixel 9 to build the Pixel 10. Pixel 9 has space for only two cameras at the back, and since the body is the same, Google might reduce the size of the other lenses to fit in the new third lens, which is going to be a telephoto lens.

That means at least the ultrawide lens will be reduced in size. Well, some people say that the addition of a telephoto lens and the removal of a bigger ultrawide lens does not make it an upgrade. Well, I and the people who think that way aren’t on the same page. Why? I have a Pixel 8 (as stated earlier), and it has a 12MP ultrawide lens.

I have compared it side by side to the Pixel 9, and it certainly is almost the same. Part of the reason is that Google relies heavily on its software, and the same story repeats with the cameras. Google’s computational photography makes the photos look good. So, it does make the Pixel 10 cameras an upgrade.

Anyway, how will the smaller ultrawide lens and a telephoto lens perform on the Pixel 10? Only the real-world usage will tell.

Rumored Minor Enhancements

One of the key aspects of any phone is the battery life and experience. With the Pixel 9, it was great, and it gets even better with the Pixel 10. Pixel 9 had a 4700mAh battery, which is majorly great for a phone of its size. The Pixel 10 will have an almost 5000mAh battery, and that too with slightly better charging speed. For reference, the Pixel 9 had a 27W fast charging; the Pixel 10 will have a 29W fast charging.

Other minor improvements will be an ultrasonic fingerprint reader, even for the base variant. Slightly better display with peak brightness reaching up to 3000 nits. There are more minor updates that aren’t significant to mention, but I won’t talk about them. Instead, let me give you a verdict.

If you have a Pixel 8 or older, I think it is going to be worth the upgrade to the Pixel 10, and likely, you will be satisfied with it.
